Planet Conjunct the Descendant vs Planet in the 7th House
How angular distance changes the visibility and strength of a planet connected with partnership.

A planet one degree from the Descendant and a planet twenty degrees inside the 7th House are both labeled 'in the 7th' by many calculators, but they are not identical. The first is tightly angular and often appears immediately in encounters. The second still belongs to partnership topics, yet may emerge more through established bonds and the affairs ruled by that planet.
Conjunction is distance-based
Measure the planet's longitude from the Descendant rather than relying only on the house label.
Angular planets are loud
Planets near the four angles are generally treated as more prominent and visible in chart interpretation.
House placement still matters
A planet deeper in the 7th House still emphasizes partnership even when it is not conjunct the cusp.
1. Define the two conditions
A planet is in the 7th House when it falls between the 7th and 8th house cusps in the selected quadrant house system. A planet is conjunct the Descendant when its zodiacal degree is close to the Descendant degree. These conditions can overlap, but they answer different questions.
House placement locates a life arena. Angular conjunction describes proximity to a powerful chart axis. The combination often makes a planet both topical and immediately visible.
2. Use an orb without pretending it is exact science
Astrologers use different orbs. A working range of about 3 degrees is strict, 5 degrees is common, and some use wider ranges for the Sun or Moon. Whatever range is selected should be applied consistently rather than widened only when a preferred interpretation needs it.
Distance is continuous. A planet at 5 degrees 1 minute does not suddenly become meaningless, but its angular claim is weaker than a planet within one degree.
3. Compare three example positions
Mars 1 degree before the Descendant may technically sit in the 6th House yet operate as a powerful angular Mars in encounters. Venus 2 degrees after the Descendant is both conjunct the angle and in the 7th House. Saturn 18 degrees into the 7th House belongs to partnership topics but should not be described as tightly conjunct the Descendant.
These distinctions prevent software labels from replacing actual measurement.
4. Birth time matters most near the angle
The angles move quickly. A small birth-time error can change the measured distance, move a planet across the cusp, or in some cases change the Descendant sign. Claims about a one-degree conjunction require more confidence in the recorded time than a broad house interpretation.
When the time is rounded or remembered, report a range. It is better to say a planet may be angular than to manufacture precision.
5. Applying and separating add a secondary layer
Some astrologers distinguish whether the planet is moving toward or away from the exact angle by primary motion or other technical frameworks. This is an advanced layer and should not obscure the basic tasks: verify time, calculate distance, identify the side of the cusp, and read the planet.
Do not use advanced terminology to compensate for uncertain input data.
6. A practical interpretation order
First name the planet's core function. Then identify its sign and aspects. Next establish whether it is in the 7th House, conjunct the Descendant, both, or neither. Finally compare it with the 7th House ruler and repeated relationship themes.
- Within 0 to 3 degrees: treat angularity as a major emphasis.
- Within 3 to 5 degrees: treat it as strong but note the chosen orb.
- Farther away: emphasize the house rather than claiming a tight conjunction.
- Near a cusp with uncertain time: calculate a time range before interpreting.
